Surprise proposals and elopements at Trillium Lake
Trillium Lake is the view most people have in mind when they imagine Oregon: Mount Hood standing at the far end of still water, holding its whole reflection. It sits deep enough into the Mount Hood National Forest to feel like the middle of the mountains, and close enough to Portland that we can be at the water before sunrise. I have photographed surprise proposals here through fog, through rain that stopped the moment we parked, and through mornings when the mountain showed up in nearly every frame. It is the place I recommend most often to couples planning a surprise proposal, an engagement session, or an intimate wedding on Mount Hood, and it is not the only place on this mountain I know well: I have travelled many times to Timberline Lodge, Little Zigzag Falls, the Salmon River, Wildwood, Lost Lake, Timothy Lake, Mirror Lake, and Lolo Pass, and if your heart is set on one of those instead, tell me and we will plan the day around it.
What sets this lake apart is how many versions of itself it offers. Low fog drifting over a mirror-calm surface at sunrise. Clouds gathering behind the summit, sometimes resting on top of it like a hat. A clear day when you can see the snow high on the mountain and the lodge above the treeline. Two or three fishermen standing quietly at the far bank in the early hours, paddleboards out on the water by afternoon. Every season, every weather, and every hour here gives you a different photograph, and it asks very little of you to reach it: you park, you walk a minute or two, and you are at the shore.
What I bring to the morning is the story. I come days ahead to scout, to see the light at that time of year and that hour, to walk the path we will take, and to design a visual plan of the prime spots with backups for every kind of weather. On the day I guide gently, offer ideas for poses, and leave you plenty of room to move, to laugh, and to be entirely yourselves—the most genuine reactions tend to arrive the second I lower my camera. You leave with Polaroids in your hands, a continuous carousel and cinematic collages formatted for Instagram, and print-quality photographs made to hang on your wall and be cherished for years.

Frequently Asked Questions
All four seasons are beautiful here, and each one gives you a different photograph. Summer and fall are the most popular, for the warm light and the easy road in. Winter and spring deserve just as much of your attention: snow high on the mountain, a quieter shore, and a stillness the busy months rarely offer.
