Mysteriously Elegant: Storytelling with Creative Portrait Techniques

The moment I saw the tunnel in the Columbia River Gorge, I instantly knew that it had so much potential for telling a visual story. That was last summer. Since then, I kept coming back to developing a unique concept I wanted to shoot. In the spring, I stumbled upon a shoot with Myra and was stunned by her natural beauty. I got excited to work with her and especially on this concept, as I thought that she would be perfect for showcasing both softness and power. The whole concept is centered around the character’s transformation, both inner and outer. As she enters the tunnel, her softness and dreamy look evolve into strength and empowerment, symbolized by deep red lipstick.

Prior to this photoshoot, I really took some time to sketch out the entire concept, frame by frame. Almost like a movie storyboard. Such thorough preparation helps the process in so many ways. First and foremost, it creates a bridge between my imagination and the model’s inspiration for the shoot. It’s a conversation starter and a source of guidelines when it comes to preparing and executing the photoshoot. What is more, it is a solid reference point in post-production. Even though I believe that some creative deviation from the initial plan is what makes the series extra special, the overall concept, its description, and story sequence are essential for achieving the desired result.

In many ways, this photoshoot was rather experimental. It incorporates several creative techniques that I so like to integrate into my shoots. For example, double exposure, color lighting, high contrast due to harsh midday sun… all these are challenges in themselves that I like to embrace in my work. I would rather try something exciting and fail than play it safe. More often than not, something unique emerges in the process.
